Make Your Own Mini Greenhouse

Here is a good tip for making your own mini greenhouse. I use a smaller size clear underbed storage box with lid. You can use any kind of clear storage container. Does not have to have a clear lid but it helps to get uniform sunlight to the seedlings. I used a plug tray. You can find these usually under a dollar at local greenhouses. Used is fine. Just please be sure to dip or spray all over with a strong bleach water solution to kill any damping off fungus that could kill your tender seedlings.

I also believe its worth the extra effort to buy the seedstarting potting soil. Its been steilized. After filling your plug trays or whatever other bleached containers with potting soil then moisten the soil uniformly. Then add your seeds. Half of this tray is cauliflower. Half is broccoli.

Then place in a warm area or on your porch in part sun. You don’t want to bake them. When your seeds germinate be sure to rotate the tub if needed. Some of the seedlings leggy if they have to stretch for light.

I pop open the lid every few days or so in the beginning daily once they germinate to let air in. Just a quick open and close is fine to let fresh air in. Once the seedlings have more than two leaves you can take the lid off full time or you just put it back on at night to hold in heat if you like. Once plants have outgrown their plug trays you let soil be on the dry side a little and poke out the plug from the bottom. The plastic is a little flexible. You then replant the seedling in a bigger pot or in the ground if you like. You could even replant in four inch pots then put in larger and deeper clear tubs with a few holes drilled in lid if they need to be protected longer.
