A Little Rouen Duckling

We had our first Rouen duckling hatched last night. Its belly button was bleeding a little which worried me but it looks just great this morning. Here he (I’m just gonna say he even though way too early to tell) is right after hatching.

And here he is the next morning. He even jumped over his thermometer to get to our hand.

Here is my husband showing our smallest son the duckling.

Here is a photo of our high tech brooder. Hehe. 🙂 Which also could be used as a high tech incubator. It is a thick styrofoam cooler that you get when you buy bulk meat with a lamp kit hanging from the top. You control the temperature not only by the type of bulb you use but by raising and lowering the lamp kit. Another way to control the heat is to cover up the holes on the top. We use this brooder in the beginning right after hatch. Later we move them to a 3×3 foot rabbit cage with a heat lamp.

what are the marbles around the mason waterer trough for?

    • That’s a great question! The marbles are there so the newly hatched babies do not drown in their water. They can still access their water but can’t sit in it or be pushed into it and drown. You can remove usually after a couple days. Something small like banties, quail or Guineas you need to wait a few weeks.
